I think that part of the reason is that online enthusiast sites take some of the interest out of the auto shows...no longer do people need to go and physically see a car to actually know what it looks like. Still, I think that there will always be a place for auto shows. But there won't be nearly as many as they're used to be. As you say , 1 or 2 a year will be sufficient.
