Less Than 48 Hours To Go And Code 45 Has Broken Even

When we planned out the Kickstarter campaign for the Code 45 graphic novel, we agonized over how to set our funding goal.

As first time creators, we knew that we had to establish trust with our audience, and a big part of that was demonstrating how much we had already personally invested into the project.

This is a big part of why I paid for the art and design costs for Issue 1 out of my own pocket. I believe in this book, and so does Scout Comics, and I felt that those two factors combined – a completed first issue, plus a committment from our creative team and our publisher – would help draw people to the project.

Still, we knew that our funding goal had to be modest. Without a track record, asking for a larger sum would have made it more difficult to attract supporters. We settled on $7,000 CAD ($5,000 USD) as a realistic amount for a single issue campaign.

This would cover some, but not all, of our costs in terms of printing and shipping Issue 1, as well as the art costs for Issue 2. We counted on attracting enough attention to fund past that amount and cover the rest of our outlay – but if we weren’t able to, it would still put us in a good position to bring the book to an audience.

Now in the final 48 hours of our Kickstarter, we’ve come close to doubling our initial funding ask. This means that we’ve now reached our goal of breaking even on the art for Issue 2, the printing and shipping costs for Issue 1, and the cost of the stretch goal extras and additional rewards (pins, stickers, and prints).

I can’t express how grateful I am for the support we’ve received, and how excited our whole team is by the enthusiastic response to Code 45. Thanks to you, we’ll be able to bring you Issue 2 in the near future, and keep the story moving forward.
