Imagine taking 96 days to drive 250 miles – that’s how treacherous the Darién Gap was when Land Rover decided to cross it as part of the British Trans-Americas Expedition, by far the craziest off-road adventure of the 1970s.

Only six other four-wheeled adventurers have made it through before or since. I went deep into the Gap with this history of Land Rover’s effort for Hagerty.
