My next adventure/project is a little out of the ordinary, even for me. From May 23 to May 31, I’m going to be riding along on the 2015 Gumball 3000 Rally, which starts in Stockholm, Sweden, and ends in Las Vegas, Nevada. In between are stops in Oslo, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Reno, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. I’ll be driving with Team AnastasiaDate and its pair of ’69 Chevrolet Camaros, which will be flown from Amsterdam to Reno aboard an Antonov so that we can renew the rally once we’re all across the Atlantic.
I can remember first seeing Gumball videos on the Internet when I was in my early 20s, and at the time it seemed so illicit and inaccessible – a cross-country rally with no real rules other than to have fun. Since that time it’s evolved into a corporate behemoth, but I’m curious to see if the spirit of the rally remains the same as when I initially encountered it so many years ago.
It’s a tight time-line – only 6 days to do 4,000 miles – and the logistics surrounding the event are mind-boggling. Fortunately, I don’t have to do much more than drive and write, and I’ll be keeping a daily journal of my Gumball experiences at The Car Guide. I hope you follow along there, or on my Twitter account, where I’ll also be posting regular updates.
